Event narrative

Fallen trees or limbs damaged power equipment, resulting in hundreds of power outages.

Wider weather episode

A shortwave trough approached from the west ahead of a cold front. Forcing from this trough and adequate bulk wind shear combined with strong surface heating and instability to result in a line of severe storms that initially developed over the North Carolina mountains. The line then pushed east across central North Carolina in the late afternoon and early evening, resulting in widespread straight-line wind damage.
