Event narrative

Tropical storm force winds, mostly in gusts associated the passage of rain bands well to the east of Hurricane Idalia's center, occurred along the reef tract south of the Middle Florida Keys. Maximum sustained winds were measured at 35knots with gusts to 51 knots at the navigational light at Sombrero Key.

Wider weather episode

The center of Hurricane Idalia passed about 165 nautical miles to the west of Key West on a northward path through the eastern Gulf of Mexico. Tropical storm-force sustained winds occurred during the passage of rain bands through the Straits of Florida. Maximum sustained winds generally in the 35 to 40 knot range with isolated gusts in excess of 50 knots occurred along the Florida Keys reef tract.
