With an abnormally dry fall for Middle Tennessee, drought conditions quickly worsened throughout the area. At the beginning of the month of October, only abnormally dry conditions were observed across portions of Middle Tennessee. However, by the end of the month, about 70 percent of the area was in at least a severe drought with about 42 percent of that area in the extreme drought category. Areas across the northwest were still only in the abnormally dry category due in part to this area receiving about 1.5 to 3 inches of rain during the month.
