A wind gust of 59 MPH was measured by a mesonet station located two miles west-northwest of Glen Elder.
Wider weather episode
There was a strong upper level low pressure system over the region. A cold front associated with this low-pressure system moved into north central Kansas during the early morning hours. Winds increased out of the northwest behind the cold front. The strong winds at the surface were strengthened by even stronger winds aloft. These conditions resulted in two severe wind gusts in Mitchell County during the late morning and early afternoon hours.
