Event narrative

Broadcast media reports multiple swimmers were caught in a rip current during the evening of September 3rd and had to be rescued. One swimmer was pronounced dead with a few others being transported to the hospital.

Wider weather episode

Breaking waves around 3 to 5 feet, multiple swell groups from offshore Hurricane Franklin and Idalia, and a dominant long period onshore swell resulted in dangerous rip currents at the New Jersey shore. A HIGH risk for rip currents was in effect.
