Dust Storm — Western Nevada Basin and Range, Nevada
2023-08-14 · Western Nevada Basin and Range, Nevada
Event narrative
Strong thunderstorm outflows caused a dust storm 9 mi SSW of Lovelock, NV, that reduced visibility to 1/4 mile at Derby Field with southeast winds gusting 30-40 mph.
Wider weather episode
An upper level shortwave swung south to north across the region that brought moisture/instability northward across much of the Sierra and western NV. This fostered increased chances (30-45%) for afternoon and evening showers/thunderstorms from I-80 southward. These storms brought lowered CIGS/VIS with terrain obscuration during heavier rainfall, gusty and erratic outflow winds with periods of blowing dust, frequent lightning and small hail. A handful of storms were expected to be on the drier side with lightning strikes outside of the wet cores on the northern edge of the moisture.
