A measured gust of 45 mph was recorded at the KDYT AWOS station at the Duluth Sky Harbor airport.

Wider weather episode

Thunderstorms developed ahead of a cold front during the late morning and early afternoon hours of the 5th across northeastern Minnesota. While the storms were rather benign over land with reports of pea-sized hail, stronger wind gusts were reported over the waters of western Lake Superior. Gusts closer to shore were in the 40 to 55 mph range with gusts to 66 mph reported by two Great Lakes bulk carriers over the open waters of western Lake Superior.
