Event narrative

Snowfall totals ranged from 2 to 5 inches, with the highest amounts occurring in northwestern portions of the county. A single fatality accident occurred late in the afternoon of the 24th near Interstate 80 interchange near Gothenburg.

Wider weather episode

A long duration, light snow event impacted Thanksgiving holiday travel for portions of south central Nebraska. Areas of light snow developed over areas along and west of Highway 183 during the early morning hours of Friday, November 24th. The snow struggled to shift eastward during the morning due to persistent dry air. However, by the afternoon, snow did shift east past the Highway 283 corridor, then to the Highway 281 corridor Friday evening and overnight. Snow intensities remained light, thus despite the long duration, total snow accumulations generally ranged from around 1 to 3 inches. An exception to this was western Dawson County where amounts reached as high as 5 inches. Impacts were largely travel related, and mostly of the nuisance level, given aforementioned light snow rates, along with relatively weak winds around 10-15 MPH. A more serious incident, however, occurred on Interstate 80 near Gothenburg in the form of a single fatality motor vehicle accident.
