Event narrative
A measured wind gust of 60 mph was recorded at a mesonet station located in Kew Garden Hills, NY at 645 AM Local Standard Time. In addition, NYC Emergency Management relayed a report of power outages in Middle Village starting at around 530 AM Local Standard Time. NYC Emergency Management also relayed a report of a total of 321 instances of downed trees, limbs and hanging limbs across Queens. The time of these instances most likely occurred between 400 AM and 700 AM Local Standard time based on radar data and nearby ground observations.
Wider weather episode
A strong area of low pressure moved north along the U.S. east coast and passed through the region during the morning of December 18, 2023. The pressure gradient tightened as the center of the storm approached, producing high winds over Southeastern New York during the morning hours.
