Extreme(D3) drought remained across the entire zone in December. The Cloudcroft Cooperative Observer reported 1.74 inches of precipitation which was 0.41 inches below normal.

Wider weather episode

Most areas of Southern New Mexico were close to average for precipitation in December leading to a majority of the area remaining in Extreme(D3) to Exceptional(D4) drought.
