The entire zone remained in Extreme(D3) drought. The Elk Cooperative Observer reported just 0.23 inches of precipitation which was 0.47 inches below normal.

Wider weather episode

Most areas of Southern New Mexico were close to average for precipitation in December leading to a majority of the area remaining in Extreme(D3) to Exceptional(D4) drought.
