Brisk, cold west-southwest winds blowing across relatively mild Lake Ontario accounted for the lake effect snow machine to develop during the afternoon hours of January 17th and continued through the afternoon hours of January 18th. The lake effect band shifted northwest to southeast during this period with the main impacts occurring during the evening hours. Snowfall totals across southern St. Lawrence county were 6 to 12+ inches.
