An area of surface low pressure moved by to the south as an upper level disturbance moved through the Ohio Valley into the Northeast. This produced a swath of four to seven inches of snow north of I-66 in Northern Virginia on January 20th. Across western Highland County, upslope snow continued through the day of January 21st resulting in storm total snowfall amounts of around one foot. Winds gusted upwards of 45 mph resulting in blowing snow.
