Drought — Randall County, Texas
2023-11-01 to 2023-11-30 · Randall County, Texas
Event narrative
A large swath of Severe Drought (D2) encompassed the southeastern third of Potter County into southwestern third of Carson County, and included the northern third or so of Armstrong County and the northeastern corner of Randall County through the month of November. Much of the southern Texas Panhandle surrounding this area of D2 continued to see Moderate Drought (D1) or Abnormally Dry (D0) conditions. This area of D2 saw 10 to 25 percent of normal precipitation over the past 120 days leading up to November 30th with low to very low soil moisture.
Wider weather episode
Lack of rainfall from mid summer through November left soil moisture very low. This did not bode well for the winter wheat crop that was planted in October. It also led to very dry vegetation that was susceptible to wildfires. At least one fire burned more than 500 acres during the month of November.
