D2 Severe Drought persisted across the southern three-quarters of the county through the month with no changes in status observed. Precipitation was within an inch of normal both above and below for the month.
Wider weather episode
Drought conditions persisted across parts of northwestern Wisconsin during the month of December. Areas of D2 Severe Drought covered parts or all of Iron, Ashland, Bayfield, Sawyer and Price counties with no changes in coverage observed over the course of the month. Precipitation for the month ended up near to above normal over most of the area thanks to a warm storm that moved through the region during the Christmas holiday period bringing rainfall to most areas. The rainfall was not enough, however, to make much of a difference in the overall dry conditions. Portions of Iron, Bayfield and Price counties were D2 Severe Drought was in place actually ended up below normal for the month in terms of precipitation.
