Winter Weather — Benton, Indiana
2024-01-22 to 2024-01-23 · Benton, Indiana
Wider weather episode
After sub freezing temperatures for over a week across all of northwest Indiana, air temperatures warmed just enough to allow mainly rain and drizzle to fall, but with ground temperatures still below freezing, mainly freezing rain and freezing drizzle occurred resulting in icy conditions for untreated surfaces. However, due to actual air temperatures around or just above freezing, there was little ice accumulation on elevated surfaces such as trees and power lines. The precipitation fell as a mixture of snow, sleet, and freezing rain during the morning of January 22nd with a lull during the afternoon and then another period of freezing rain during the evening of January 22nd through morning of January 23rd, when temperatures finally warmed sufficiently above freezing that most surfaces became wet and the precipitation transitioned to liquid rain and drizzle.
