Event narrative

Light freezing rain accumulations followed by a period of sub-freezing temperatures resulted in numerous hazardous roads and traffic accidents. US Highway 278 between Walnut Grove and Holly Pond was impassable, with multiple stranded tractor-trailers by late on January 16.

Wider weather episode

Moisture associated with an arctic airmass moved across northwest parts of Central Alabama from January 15 into January 16. A wintry mix of freezing rain, sleet, and snow moved across the area, with accumulations totaling up to 2 inches across Marion and Winston counties.
