Wider weather episode
Slow progression of a trough over the East Coast caused rain to change over to snow in the higher elevations during the evening of December 10th into the early morning hours of December 11th. Preston and Tucker County had 3-6 inches of snow as sufficiently deep moisture was transported from the Gulf of Mexico. Precipitable water was likely still 0.4 to 0.5 inches during the transition in precipitation type. Snow continued through late morning in the wake of the trough with northwest flow and upsloping.
