Event narrative
A narrow band of heavy snow got into Richmond County (Staten Island) with the highest amounts over the southern half of the zone. A Cocorahs observer reported 7.8 inches at 1 N Tottenville. The public reported 10.0 inches at 1 WSW Tottenville, 9.5 inches at 1 SE Huguenot, 9.1 inches at 1 SSW Huguenot, 8.6 inches at 1 E New Dorp, 7.8 inches at 1 N Tottenville, and 6.8 inches at Westerleigh. Further north in the zone only 3.5 inches was reported at 1 WNW Tompkinsville which corresponded well to radar and the band orientation.
Wider weather episode
A mid level disturbance associated with a confluent upper level trough lead to strong mid level frontogenesis that developed a band of snow to the north of developing low pressure moving offshore. Southwestern portions of the area were on the northern edge of a narrow band of heavy snow that resulted in some southwestern zones reaching warning criteria. Amounts were considerably less to the north.
