Heavy Snow — Kings (brooklyn), New York
2024-02-17 · Kings (brooklyn), New York
Event narrative
A band of heavy snow got into most of Brooklyn, with perhaps far northern parts of the zone averaging below warning criteria with less reports further north and based on radar analysis and location of the stronger radar reflectivity. However most of the zone reported with warning criteria snowfall. Snowfall reports from Broadcast Media included 7.3 inches at Midwood. A trained spotter reported 8.0 inches at Sheepshead Bay and 5.2 inches at 2 WNW Crown Heights. Public reports around Bay Ridge varied from around 5 to 7.6 inches, and 6.5 inches in Williamsburg. The lowest report was from 2 W Crown Heights at 4.7 inches. Thus amounts of those reported averaged more than warning criteria and more than half the zone spatially reached warning criteria.
Wider weather episode
A mid level disturbance associated with a confluent upper level trough lead to strong mid level frontogenesis that developed a band of snow to the north of developing low pressure moving offshore. Southwestern portions of the area were on the northern edge of a narrow band of heavy snow that resulted in some southwestern zones reaching warning criteria. Amounts were considerably less to the north.
