A heavy to moderate band of snow scraped southern portion of Southwest Suffolk. In general 3 to 5 inches fell across the zone. Trained spotters reported 4.0 inches in Copiague, 4.5 inches in West Islip, and 3.6 inches at 1 WNW Babylon. Broadcast media reported 4.9 inches in Babylon. The airport at Islip reported 3.4 inches.
Wider weather episode
A mid level disturbance associated with a confluent upper level trough lead to strong mid level frontogenesis that developed a band of snow to the north of developing low pressure moving offshore. Southwestern portions of the area were on the northern edge of a narrow band of heavy snow that resulted in some southwestern zones reaching warning criteria. Amounts were considerably less to the north.
