Event narrative

Snow squalls arrived in the lower Kennebec River Valley during the afternoon on the 17th. The Augusta State Airport reported visibility dropping to one quarter mile with winds gusting to 29 mph. The squalls lasted about 20 minutes at any given location before conditions improved. Snowfall amounts were generally less than 1 inch.

Wider weather episode

Early on the 17th a coastal storm passed well south of New England, with light snow just barely reaching southern New Hampshire. A trailing shortwave trough drove a strong cold front through the Saint Lawrence River Valley early in the morning. The cold front crossed the international border and into western Maine after sunrise on the 17th. As daytime heating increased the low level instability, snow showers along the front became more organized and a broken band of snow squalls swept towards the Mid-coast during the afternoon.
