A measured wind gust of 59 mph was recorded at a mesonet station located at the College of Staten Island in Staten Island, NY at 520 AM Local Standard Time. A measured wind gust of 66 mph was recorded at a mesonet station located at Robbins Reef Lighthouse at 448 AM Local Standard Time. In addition, NYC Emergency Management relayed a report of a total of 64 instances of downed trees, limbs and hanging limbs across Staten Island. The time of these instances most likely occurred between 400 AM and 700 AM Local Standard Time based on radar data and nearby ground observations.

Wider weather episode

A strong area of low pressure moved north along the U.S. east coast and passed through the region during the morning of December 18, 2023. The pressure gradient tightened as the center of the storm approached, producing high winds over Southeastern New York during the morning hours.
