The second arctic cold front in 4 days brought gusty northwest winds and another shot of very cold air to the southern Appalachians in the wake of an arctic cold front. Winds gusting from 30 to 45 mph combined with air temperatures in the single digits, with some below zero readings observed above 4000 feet, to produce wind chill values between 10 and 25 below above 3500 feet. Meanwhile, wind chill values from 0 to 10 below were observed in the North Carolina mountains valleys and across the higher elevations of South Carolina and northeast Georgia.
