Event narrative

The month started out with Extreme(D3) drought areawide, by the end of the month, the northwest portion was put in Severe(D2) drought. The Cooperative Observer in Cliff reported 1.99 inches of precipitation which was 0.83 inches above normal.

Wider weather episode

Most areas of southern New Mexico had near average or above average precipitation in January. This moisture helped to improve drought conditions slightly for portions of the region.
