January started with Extreme(D3) drought over the far southeast portion of the zone and Severe(D2) elsewhere. By the end of the month, the entire zone was in Severe(D2) drought. The Truth or Consequences Airport reported 0.63 inches of precipitation, which was 0.18 inches above normal.

Wider weather episode

Most areas of southern New Mexico had near average or above average precipitation in January. This moisture helped to improve drought conditions slightly for portions of the region.
