The entire zone remained in Extreme(D3) drought in January. The Cooperative Observer in Elk reported just 0.08 inches of precipitation, which was 0.43 inches below normal.
Wider weather episode
Most areas of southern New Mexico had near average or above average precipitation in January. This moisture helped to improve drought conditions slightly for portions of the region.
