Event narrative

A volunteer observer reported 11.0 of snowfall near Tomah.

Wider weather episode

A second heavy snowfall event within a long-lived winter storm impacted southwest into central Wisconsin from January 12th into the 13th. A narrow band of heavy snow with rates of 1 to 2 per hour situated itself from southwest into central Wisconsin for much of January 12th. Accompanying wind gusts of 30 to 40 mph resulted in localized whiteout conditions and rapidly deteriorating road conditions. Sheriff offices reported numerous automobile slide offs and accidents as strong winds perpetuated drifting snow on roadways. Multiple road closures were reported including Wisconsin State Highway 133 between Bloomington (Grant County) and Cassville (Grant County) due to immobilization of plows overnight January 12th into the 13th from ongoing drifting and blowing snow. The longer duration narrow corridor of increased snowfall resulted in highly variable storm total accumulations, ranging from 10 to 14 from southwest into central Wisconsin to 3 to 8 across west-central Wisconsin. Highest reported values were 15.0 in Platteville (Grant County), 14.4 in Prairie du Chien (Crawford County), 14.0 in Stitzer (Crawford County), and 13.8 near Richland Center (Richland County).
