An automated weather observation station reported a wind chill of 38 degrees below zero in Jackson Junction.

A multi-faceted winter storm event through the middle of January ushered in an arctic airmass with bitter cold through Martin Luther King Junior Day. A 20 to 30 degree drop in minimum temperatures from January 13th through January 14th brought minimum temperatures of 10 to 20 degrees below zero across northeast Iowa. Combined with winds gusting 20 to 30 mph, wind chill temperatures reached 30 to 40 degrees below zero during the early morning of January 14th across northeast Iowa. Minimum wind chill reports during this time were -45 degrees in Greene (Floyd County), -43 degrees near Dougherty (Floyd County), -42 degrees in Oelwein (Fayette County), and -41 degrees at numerous other sites.
