An automated weather observation station reported a wind chill of 42 degrees below zero in Byron.

A multi-faceted winter storm event through the middle of January ushered in an arctic airmass with bitter cold through Martin Luther King Junior Day. A 20 to 30 degree drop in minimum temperatures from January 13th through January 14th brought minimum temperatures of 5 to 15 degrees below zero across southeast Minnesota. Combined with winds gusting 25 to 35 mph, wind chill temperatures reached 30 to 40 degrees below zero during the early morning hours of January 14th across southeast Minnesota. Minimum wind chill reports were -44 degrees in Dexter (Mower County), -43 degrees in Austin (Mower County), -42 degrees in Byron (Dodge County), and -41 degrees in Stewartville (Olmsted County) and Lyle (Mower County).
