Wider weather episode

Cold temperatures blasted into the Ohio River Valley in the wake of a cold front on January 15th. A southern stream disturbance grazing parts of the Appalachians brought light snow showers to parts of southeast Ohio, but only resulted in light accumulations at best. For this part of the area, plunging temperatures posed the biggest concern as a result of this nearby disturbance.

In Meigs County, an 89-year-old man living in the town of Shade died due to hypothermia on the evening of January 15th after spending the night outside in the frigid temperatures. He was found by police on the afternoon of the 16th several hundred yards from his home in a wooded area at the edge of the West Shade River.
