Winter Weather in Eastern Preston, West Virginia

Winter Weather January 15, 2024 – January 16, 2024 · Eastern Preston, West Virginia

What the National Weather Service wrote

A total of 4 to 5.5 inches of snow fell, with the highest total reported 7 miles north of Thomas.

The wider storm

While surface low pressure tracked from the southeast CONUS off of the Mid-Atlantic coast on January 15th and 16th, an upper-level shortwave trough dug from the Upper Midwest into the Upper Ohio Valley. While moisture overall was not excessive, snow accumulation was highly efficient thanks to sufficiently cold temperatures and upward motion in the dendritic growth layer. This led to an accumulation of several inches across the region, with eastern Tucker County getting warning-level totals.
