Wider weather episode

The Rio Grande Valley Wind Machine developed on January 8th as a vigorous storm system housing a large and strong wind field moved across the southern Plains producing tropical storm to hurricane force winds in the Rio Grande Valley. Strong winds occurred on both sides of the associated cold front. The strongest winds which produced damage across parts of the area occurred in the southerly flow between a deepening trough along the Sierra Madre high pressure over the Gulf of Mexico. Widespread wind gusts out of the south between 30-50 mph occurred across the region. There were a few sites that had higher gusts such as McAllen at 54 mph, Harlingen at 55 mph, Port Isabel at 67 mph, Hurricane Force gusts (74 mph) at Brownsville. Behind the cold front, winds remained strong out of the northwest, but not as strong as the southerly winds ahead of the front.
