Gusty northwest winds brought very cold air to the southern Appalachians in the wake of an arctic cold front. Winds gusting from 35 to 50 mph combined with air temperatures in the single digits, with some below zero readings observed above 4000 feet, to produce wind chill values between 10 and 20 below above 3500 feet. Meanwhile, wind chill values of 5 to 10 below were observed in the lower elevations from the French Broad Valley north.
