Precipitation overspread the southern Appalachians during the early morning of the 9th in advance of a strong storm system. Once the precip began, pockets of cold air developed and became trapped for a few hours in a small area along the eastern Blue Ridge escarpment of North Carolina. This resulted in freezing rain falling in these areas. Isolated ice accretion was reported, with a few locations receiving almost a quarter inch.
