In the wake of a cold front, northwest winds pushing moisture of the western slopes of the Appalachians combined with quickly falling snow levels to result in a brief period of snow showers across the higher elevations of the North Carolina mountains during the early morning hours of the 31st. Total accumulations of 1 to 3 inches were reported across Avery County, with some locally higher amounts up to 6 inches occurring across the higher peaks and ridge tops.
