An upper-level system moved across the region, bringing a couple of disturbances across the northern Plains. A stronger disturbance moved across the area on the 31st into April 1st, and with colder air in place, produced a more widespread area of accumulating snowfall. Amounts of 2 to around 6 inches were common across much of southwest and south-central South Dakota, with at least localized higher amounts to around 10 inches.
