High Wind in Union County, New Mexico
High Wind April 5, 2024 · Union County, New Mexico
What the National Weather Service wrote
A 59 mph wind gust was observed at the Clayton Municipal Airport.
The wider storm
Upper-level winds increased over New Mexico ahead of a low pressure system moving into the Pacific coast. Warm temperatures and deep mixing allowed these stronger upper-level winds to reach the surface across western, central and northeast New Mexico. This resulted in some high wind gusts at Clayton and across White Sands Missile Range during the afternoon. Later, high wind gusts occurred at Farmington and Gallup in western New Mexico shortly after sunset as a Pacific cold front moved through the region.
