Event narrative

A trained spotter reported 2 inches of snow with heavy snowfall rates between noon and 3pm in downtown Haines. Another spotter reported on social media that 6.5 inches had fallen by 5pm on the Chilkat Peninsula, then had 9 inches by later in the night. Another trained spotted reported that between 8am and 8pm, snowfall had reached a total of 7 inches, with snow having stopped. A report was also received of freezing rain during the morning time frame in Haines with some ice accumulation.

Wider weather episode

A frontal system slowly tracked over the panhandle, then stalled. An isothermal layer and outflow winds caused snow to continue across Haines and Juneau, while warming led to mixing and compaction.
