Event narrative

South winds were sustained at 25 to 35 mph...with gusts up to around 60 mph. A peak wind gust of 60 mph was reported near Eastport during the late evening of the 28th. The winds snapped branches and toppled trees leading to power outages.

Wider weather episode

A strong cold front crossed the region through the evening of the 28th into the early morning hours of the 29th. A strong southerly low level jet crossed the region in advance of the cold front. Several rounds of high winds occurred. An initial round of high winds occurred during the afternoon of the 28th along with an area of heavy rain. A second round of high winds occurred in the vicinity of the cold front, once the pre-frontal inversion was broken, during the evening of the 28th into the early morning hours of the 29th. Peak wind gusts during both rounds of high winds were around 60 mph. The winds snapped branches and brought down trees which led to power outages. Saturated soil from the heavy rain allowed trees to be more easily toppled.
