The NOAA ATDD weather station at Camp Creek Elementary recorded a 71 mph non-thunderstorm wind gust. A nearby weather station in Unicoi County recorded a 53 mph wind gust 30 minutes prior to this observation.

A shortwave weather system with a strong winds aloft and a sharp pressure gradient helped generate a mountain wave event in the East Tennessee mountains followed by severe thunderstorms in the Tennessee Valley.
