The wider storm

A frontal system intensified as it moved from the southern Mississippi River Valley into the Carolinas and southwestern Virginia on February 12. Behind this front was an exceptional pressure gradient that created damaging wind gusts during the morning hours of February 13. Damage to trees was enhanced due to a saturated ground from recent rainfall.
