A public comment on social media reported 7 inches already in Hoonah by 7am on the 27th. The Hoonah COOP station at the water treatment plan measured 12 inches of snow by 9am along with very poor visibility. The COOP measured another 4.8 inches by the following morning. Other social media reports in Hoonah noted an estimated 18 inches in under 6 hours and another shared a photo of 2 feet as of 1235pm with snow continuing to fall heavily. The Hoonah airport was reporting gusts of 20-30 mph and visibility down to a quarter mile.
Wider weather episode
A slow moving system with cold air in place brought widespread snowfall across the panhandle. Blowing snow with reduced visibility and heavy rates were observed followed by post-frontal snow showers.
