Winter Storm — Haines Borough and Klukwan, Alaska

2024-03-07 to 2024-03-08 · Haines Borough and Klukwan, Alaska

Event narrative

The COOP station at Haines Customs measured 6.5 inches of snow at 7am on the 8th with most of that falling overnight and moderate snow continuing to fall. The station measured an additional 4 inches of snow by the next morning, but with most of that ending by mid day on the 8th, resulting in approximately 10 inches of snow in 12 hours. Snowfall totals in town were 3 to 5 inches followed by a change over to rain.

Wider weather episode

A series of weather fronts moving into SE AK opened the path for a stream of moisture to reach into the northern half of the panhandle. Drainage flow kept temperatures

sufficiently cold enough to support continued snow accumulation in Haines before a shift in wind direction and a change to rain at sea level.
