Winter Weather — Anchorage, Alaska

2024-02-02 to 2024-02-04 · Anchorage, Alaska

Event narrative

A public report of 8.3 inches of storm total snowfall was received shortly after 4 PM AKST on the northwest side of Anchorage. Numerous other reports of 5 to 8 inches of snowfall accumulation were received between 2/3 and 2/4 across Anchorage.

Wider weather episode

A low pressure and frontal system moved up from Kodiak Island into the Kenai Peninsula early in February, producing several inches of snow across much of the Kenai Peninsula and up across the Anchorage area. Temperatures in place ahead of this system were seasonably cold, allowing for very high snow to liquid water ratios and fluffy snow to quickly accumulate. Gusty northerly winds also lead to localized areas of reduced visibility in blowing/drifting snow from Anchorage to the western Kenai Peninsula.
