Event narrative
Strong southerly chinook winds developed in the Eastern Alaska Range on March 30th. South winds gusts to 74 mph were reported at Air Force Tower (AFTA2). Winds diminished during the overnight hours.
Wider weather episode
A strong low moved from the North Pacific to Bristol Bay to the Interior and the North Slope. This low tightened the pressure gradient across the Alaska Range resulting in high winds in the Eastern Alaska Range and blizzard conditions along the West Coast. Blizzard conditions at Kotzebue continued into the morning hours of April 1st.
