Heavy Snow in Koochiching, Minnesota

A large spring storm brought heavy snowfall to much of northeastern Minnesota the 24th into the 26th. Dry air at the surface let to a delayed start across Koochiching County, but snow ended up being a bit heavier than expected when temperatures remained cooler and mixed precipitation did not really occur. Snowfall totals of 7 to 11 inches were reported across the county with a high report of 11.7 inches in International Falls.

A long duration snowfall event affected northeastern Minnesota starting on the 24th of March and continued into the 26th in some areas as multiple waves of snow moved across the region in association with a slow moving area of low pressure. Widespread snowfall totals of 6 to 12 inches were reported across the region with higher amounts in excess of 20 inches along the terrain ridge from Duluth to north of Two Harbors and in the Brainerd area. Near blizzard conditions were seen along the North Shore as well with winds up to 30 mph during the heaviest snowfall. While most of the snowfall ended the night of the 25th, lingering light snowfall and continued impacts of poor road conditions lead to travel issues for much of the 26th as well as the region dug out from the snow.
