The public estimated thunderstorm wind gusts of 70 to 80 mph was responsible for knocking down Cottonwood tree limbs.

Wider weather episode

Weak low pressure moving through central South Dakota provided the focus for strong to severe thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening hours. Peak winds of 64 mph were measured at the Department of Transportation weather station 10 miles southwest of Chantier Creek Recreation Area. Hail ranged from dime to ping pong sized with the largest of that falling 7 miles northwest of McLaughlin.
