Event narrative
Potent thunderstorm downburst winds caused severe damage. Significant roof damage occurred to the Russellville Elementary and subsequent water intrusion into several classrooms and gymnasium. Other structural roof damage occurred to some homes and several tree trunks were snapped with just a few trees uprooted. The Morristown Memorial Gardens Mausoleum also sustained roof damage. The Bethesda Cemetery sustained numerous trees snapped. The total area affected was roughly two square miles.
Wider weather episode
A cutoff low over the North Plains, coupled with intense winds aloft and a cold front at the surface, helped spawn multiple rounds of severe thunderstorms that produced hail, flash flooding, and damaging winds to East Tennessee.
