Event narrative

Daytime highs ranged between 103 and 107 degrees on June 22, between 106 and 110 degrees on June 23 and between 101 and 105 degrees on June 24 and 25.

Wider weather episode

A strong upper ridge built into central California from the Desert Southwest on June 22 and remained over the region through June 25 before weakening ahead of an approaching trough. The ridging resulted widespread triple digit heat across the San Joaquin Valley, West Side Hills and lower Sierra foothills between June 22 and June 25. Some tropical moisture from the remains of Tropical Strom Alberto was pulled up by the upper high and spread into southern California on June 23 and into central California on June 24 which resulted in higher heat indexes across the lower elevations on June 24 and some dry thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening on June 24 which ignited several grass and brush fires in the eastern portion of the San Joaquin Valley and the Sierra foothills.
